Longterm exhibition
Nitra
Author: Katarína Beňová
From February 1, 2024, in the corridors of the Nitra Regional Museum, the products of the Nitra porcelain painting workshop are being presented – mainly plates with various motifs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Initially, the Nitra porcelain painting workshop had its workshop in the location of the former fair near Alžbeta´s street, near the railway station, on the later Družstevná street. The owners of the business ordered ready-made white stoneware or porcelain products, plates and bowls from Wilhelmsburg and Znojmo. Soon, the painted products were also used on the Viennese market. In August 1900, the company The Sons of Jonáš Neumann established a branch of Nitra porcelain painting workshop on the then Kalmárská street, today’s Kupecká street, and at the same time opened a shop there. The motifs, subjects and themes that were displayed on the products were determined by the taste and demand of the time. However, you can definitely feel the influence of Art Nouveau, which is represented by delicate stylized plant and flower ornaments. Biblical motifs and figural folk ornaments are also found on preserved products. The plate with the image of old Párovce with the Church of St. Stefan is exceptional in particular. Some decors were painted freely, others using stencils. The name of the painter who worked in the painting studio is known, too. His name was Jozef Schiffner and his paintings were truly artistic. Welcome to the museum!
The partner of the exhibition is the Nitra Self-Governing Region.
